  • Intel HDA fix for Ubuntu

To get the sound working for your Intel HDA card on Ubuntu (or possibly other distros) :

    1. nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

    2. Add line: options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3

    3. Save, reboot. (yes, I know, I restarted the services and was not working)

  • Netbooks to save Linux?

    linuxborntofrag

We are all observing something incredible - more people are ticking the Linux box when buying a computer from different companies, such as Dell, Acer, HP and Assus. Well, when buying a netbook to be precise. Netbooks helped Linux not only to gain popularity, but also drove the attention of hardware manufacturers to the lack of hardware drivers for the os - one of Linux’s biggest problems. I never had the case to install a Linux distro and have everything working out of the box, on my laptop. If you go and buy the latest gadget, the chance to be compatible with Linux is not very high as well. One thing is for sure - more people using Linux out there = bigger demand == better hardware compatibility.

  • Camera marketing

I hate Canon. They took the 450D, add HD video, one or two software tweaks, and here it is - the new Canon 500D. Well, the price is almost double the previous model (490 vs 890 GBP), but the rest of the features (and the image quality!) are absolutely identical. I expected something far greater than that.

DTownTV is the weekly show for Nikon DSLR users. It airs each Thursday and runs 10-12 minutes, is sponsored by Nikon and produced by Kelby Training. With Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski, as its hosts, DTownTV is a fresh approach to teaching camera tips and photographic techniques to today’s digital photographers. No matter what skill level or interest, each episode covers a wide range of topics.

  • Canon G10 and RAW

If you already have the new G10 by Canon and want to shoot RAW, you’ll eventually find out it is more or less pointless. I was suprised there is still no working plugin for both Photoshop and Lightroom for Canon’s CR2 propreitary format.  Your only choice is to use the supplied with the camera Digital Photo Professional, which, of course, don’t have the capabilities of any of the mentioned above software packages.

P.S. I tried to open the RAW files with PaintShop Photo, Picasa 3.0 and IrfanView - same result.

Edit: Lightroom 2.2 now supports Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon PowerShot G10 and Panasonic DMC-LX3. Hooray!

  • Finally online

Due to server migration (but still on an ICN hosting) cyb3r.net is finally online, after nearly 2 months of downtime. Lots of things happend, but in general, I’m again in the UK, working on my assignments and projects, and enjoying the uni life. All that, after a pleasant christmas break in Bulgaria.

You’ll probably notice the new box on the right with my photos on flickr - I’m spending more and more time reading about photography, and the results will be posted there ( I don’t have a DSLR though :( ).

Meanwhile, the cigars.bg project was having a nice vacation as well. We will polish the last details soon.
